Pre-dispute resolution
Last updated: March 25, 2026
Proactively manage and resolve potential disputes before they impact your dispute ratio with pre-dispute resolution tools. These services give you more control over your dispute strategy, helping you to reduce financial losses and improve your dispute ratio with card schemes.
Using pre-dispute solutions to resolve disputes is ideal for scenarios in which you:
- Are losing a significant number of disputes and want to automatically resolve disputes that you have a low probability of winning.
- Do not have the resources to adequately represent disputes and lose a majority of them.
There are several key benefits to using pre-dispute solutions:
- Automation – Pre-dispute rules run automatically. This reduces the need to manually process refunds or represent disputes.
- Ease of integration – If you already use Checkout.com for acquiring services, there are no additional integration requirements.
- Flexibility – For additional control over your dispute strategy, you can define custom pre-dispute rules.
- Improved customer satisfaction – Benefit from improved issue resolution time and transparency for your customers.
Visa Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) is a pre-dispute solution that can resolve Visa disputes in real time by accepting liability and refunding the customer when your custom rules are triggered.
You can use RDR to resolve disputes before they count towards your Visa dispute ratio.
To avoid duplicate refunds, do not refund transactions that qualify for RDR until you have verified that the customer did not raise a dispute. If you're using a third-party RDR provider, set up a process to avoid refunding transactions that RDR has processed.
Information
RDR is offered through Verifi, a Visa company. To enable RDR, contact your account manager or request support.
RDR forms part of our pre-dispute solution. RDR occurs before the regular chargeback process starts, enabling you to resolve disputes before they count towards your Visa dispute ratio.
Note
If a chargeback is not accepted as a pre-dispute by your rules, it will become a regular dispute and count towards your dispute ratio.
In addition to Visa Rapid Dispute Resolution, Checkout.com also supports Mastercard Ethoca alerts, a pre-dispute solution designed to help you resolve potential disputes before they escalate into formal chargebacks.
Ethoca Alerts enable you to proactively manage disputes, reducing the impact on your Mastercard chargeback ratio. You may also receive Ethoca alerts on Visa transactions if the issuing bank supports it.
Similar to Visa RDR, you can define custom rules that, when triggered, automatically accept alerts. We process the refund on your behalf based on these configurations, simplifying the dispute resolution process and removing the need for complex integration.
